The promise of the cloud is paying only for what you use. The reality is often paying for what you forgot.
Start with visibility
You cannot optimize what you cannot attribute. Enforce a tagging standard — owner, environment, product, cost center — and block untagged resources with policy-as-code.
Quick wins (weeks 1–4)
- Delete idle volumes, snapshots and unattached IPs.
- Schedule non-production environments to shut down out of hours.
- Rightsize instances using 30 days of utilization data.
Structural savings (months 1–3)
- Commit to savings plans or reserved capacity for steady workloads.
- Move batch and fault-tolerant jobs to spot capacity.
- Adopt managed and serverless services where operations cost dominates.
Make cost an engineering metric
Show cost per customer, per transaction or per environment on the same dashboards as latency and errors. When engineers see cost, they design for it.
Build the habit
FinOps is a practice, not a project. A monthly review of anomalies, commitments and unit costs keeps savings from eroding.
The best cost optimization does not slow anyone down — it makes efficiency part of how teams already work.
